What is Authentication? Definition and explanations

Authentication is verifying that a person or system really is who they claim to be. It relies on one or more factors: something you know, something you have, something you are. It answers the question "who are you". It says nothing about what you are then allowed to do — that is authorisation's job, and confusing the two creates security holes.
