What is CVE? Definition and explanations

A CVE (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) is a unique public identifier assigned to one specific vulnerability in a product, in the form CVE-2024-12345. The CVE Program, coordinated by MITRE, gives everyone — vendors, researchers, security teams — the same name for the same flaw. Technical description and severity score are published in the NIST NVD.
