What is Data breach? Definition and explanations

A data breach is the unauthorised access, disclosure or loss of personal or confidential information. It can result from an intrusion, but just as often from a misconfiguration, an email sent to the wrong recipient or a lost device. In Quebec, Law 25 requires keeping a register of confidentiality incidents and reporting those that present a risk of serious injury.
