What is Data migration? Definition and explanations

A data migration moves information from one system to another: legacy software to a new one, server to cloud, database to database. It covers extraction, transformation into the target format, loading and — above all — reconciliation, checking that nothing was lost or distorted. Prior clean-up and dry runs account for most of the effort.
