What is Geolocation? Definition and explanations

Geolocation determines the position of a device or a user, from GPS, mobile networks, Wi-Fi or the IP address — with very different accuracy depending on the source. It serves delivery, fleet tracking, local recommendations and local SEO. It is personal information. In Quebec, technology that can locate a person requires prior notice and a way to activate the function (Law 25, s. 8.1): it is not on by default. Location is not automatically sensitive information (s. 12); express consent is required only when the nature or context creates a high reasonable expectation of privacy.
