Anthropic: donating Agent Skills to the Agentic AI FoundationD

Anthropic announced the donation of the Agent Skills standard to the Agentic AI Foundation on October 22, 2026. The transfer concerns governance of an existing standard.
Products using Agent Skills retain their own availability and support conditions. Before transferring a skill, check compatible tools, their versions and the workflow’s dependencies in your environment. Compatibility needs to be established for the specific tools and permissions involved.
Write a procedure that staff can review
For a smaller company, the practical starting point may be a repeated task: how to prepare a reply to a quote request, which documents to consult and when approval is required. A useful procedure identifies necessary inputs and exceptions. The person accountable for the work should be able to read and assess it.
In a fictional example, a skill could guide preparation of a contract renewal without authorizing the agent to send it. A manager could review the steps and references before assigning it to an agent. This illustrates a possible use; it does not describe a tested integration or a customer outcome.
Planning CRM and ERP automation then requires separating work instructions from permissions. A procedure describing an update does not grant the agent permission to apply it. The server and connectors must continue enforcing the organization’s intended access rules and required approvals.
Verify reuse in each environment
A RAG knowledge base can provide documents referenced in the procedure. When changing tools, check that links lead to the appropriate versions and that the user may access the sources. Transferring instructions does not establish that document permissions are preserved correctly in the new workflow.
For a custom web application, prepare a skills inventory naming each owner, version and required dependency. Include an incomplete request and a case requiring a person’s intervention. Defined expected outcomes then provide a basis for comparing behaviour across the environments being considered.
A reasonable next step is to select one procedure, remove secrets and have the business owner review it. Then verify compatibility in the chosen product and run the scenarios with fictional information. The standard’s donation provides context for that decision; the workflow’s reliability still needs to be established in the company’s own environment.
