Before entrusting calls to an AI voice agent, test what it records and what it promises the client. A pleasant voice can confirm the wrong time slot or lose a correction. Testing should cover comprehension errors, unavailable tools, and human takeover. The following twelve tests provide a base to adapt to your business and callers.
Define the result of a successful call
Let's take a fictitious example of scheduling an appointment. A successful call contains a sufficiently verified identity, a chosen service, and a time slot actually recorded in the calendar. The agent reads back the important details and only confirms after the booking system responds. If the calendar is unavailable, the result becomes a request to retry, with an explanation to the client.
Separate conversation quality from action quality. Evaluate request comprehension, correction handling, and the result in the tool. Also measure abandoned calls and transfers. A long conversation with a complete summary can still leave the appointment nonexistent.
The Bookia implementation page presents an example of a voice project. For your own pilot, choose your acceptance criteria with the people who receive the calls. The cases and acceptance thresholds described here are test proposals, without client results attributed to Daillac.
Prepare representative test conversations
Use a fictitious agenda and contacts. Prepare several formulations per scenario, with voices and sound conditions corresponding to your callers. A test always read by the same person in a quiet room covers few situations.
Accents and language changes must be tested on authorized data for your project. Keep the necessary records for testing with defined duration and access. The Twilio documentation on Media Streams describes a way to transmit audio to applications; the behavior of your solution also depends on the transcription and synthesis services used.
For each test, note the message heard, the proposed action, exchanges with the agenda, and the final result. A call error to the tool can be distinct from a comprehension error. The team can thus correct the appropriate component.
The twelve tests to pass
Expected results must be validated by your department manager. For critical entries, a single failure in these cases must block the scenario from going into production until correction and a new test.
TableTest · shareable block
| Conversation or incident | Expected result | |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Noise | Request spoken with background noise | Have the uncertain information repeated; no invented confirmation |
| 2. Accent | Same need expressed with several accents | Check sensitive fields and retain the correct service |
| 3. French and English | The caller changes language | Continue in the supported language or propose a transfer |
| 4. Ambiguous name | Two similar names or contacts | Ask for clarification without exposing the other file |
| 5. Incomplete request | Service or date missing | Ask the necessary question before booking |
| 6. No slot | Full schedule | Offer only authorized options or a follow-up |
| 7. Duplicate | Request repeated after network silence | Check the existing appointment before creating another |
| 8. Correction | The caller changes the date at the end of the call | Review the new proposal and check the status of the old one |
| 9. Out of scope | Question requiring a business decision | Explain the limit and transfer according to the planned path |
| 10. Uncertainty | Number or detail misheard | Request a targeted confirmation, with a limited number of attempts |
| 11. Transfer requested | "I want to speak to someone" | Trigger the transfer or announce the available callback mechanism |
| 12. Tool unavailable | The schedule refuses or no longer responds | Announce the lack of confirmation and keep the request to follow up |
The correction test must check the schedule after the call. If the agent creates a new appointment and forgets to cancel the old one, the conversation may appear successful while the result is wrong. Test the correction before and after the initial record.
In the duplicate test, simulate a successful write for which the network response is lost. The agent must recover the operation’s state before retrying. A blind repetition can reserve twice. The CRM and ERP integrations must provide for this control at the tool level.
Organize the transfer and stoppages
Define human takeover hours, transfer destinations, and behavior outside of these hours. The customer must know whether they are waiting for a person, leaving a callback request, or if the call ends. Avoid loops in which the agent repeats the same question without offering a resolution.
Set the situations that require stopping: identity not confirmed for a sensitive operation, conflict between two reservations, or explicit refusal from the customer. The workflow must apply this stop before any new writing call. A conversation instruction alone leaves control dependent on the model's interpretation.
A useful transfer contains the reason for the call and the information the person has already provided. Keep this summary limited to the service's needs. The employee should be able to continue without asking the customer to repeat the entire story, while still verifying the elements necessary for the action.
Measure the test and launch
Follow correct reservations, retries, duplicates, and incorrect confirmations. Add the response delay in the sections where the client waits. The Principles of voice recognition development help reposition the transcription in the complete workflow.
After testing, start on a limited and monitored scope. Maintain a procedure to redirect calls to the usual path. Replay the test after a model, prompt, or schedule change. A different version may change the responses and the timing when the agent calls a tool.
The budget of an AI agent must include this monitoring phase. The Telephone voice agent service can be defined around the handled calls and the tests you wish to succeed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a good transcription rate enough to accept the agent?+
Transcription does not measure the correctness of a reservation or modification. Also verify the action in the tool, corrections, and transfers. Define the errors that block the test, even if the conversation seems smooth.
How many conversations need to be tested?+
The number depends on the diversity of calls and the risk of the actions. The twelve scenarios are a base to be adapted with several formulations. Choose a representative sample and keep a fixed set to compare versions.
Can sensitive calls be entrusted to the agent?+
First define the authorized operations and the necessary identity verification. Some needs must remain in a human process. The business manager must approve this scope and the transfer situations before the launch.
What should the client hear when the calendar does not respond?+
An explanation indicating that the appointment is not confirmed and the next available step. The agent must avoid promising a booking they cannot verify. The request to be resumed must be kept in a tool accessible to the team.
