What is High availability? Definition and explanations

High availability is a service's ability to stay reachable despite the failure of one of its components. It relies on redundancy — multiple instances, multiple zones — and automatic failover. It is expressed as a percentage of uptime: 99.9% leaves roughly eight hours of downtime per year, 99.99% about fifty minutes.
