B2B digital marketing becomes measurable when a company can distinguish visibility, contact requests, and qualified business opportunities. An increase in visits does not prove an increase in prospects. A submitted form does not prove that a project matches your offer either. Linking SEO, forms, and CRM allows explaining these steps without inventing perfect attribution.
In brief
- Define what constitutes a contact and a qualified opportunity.
- Measure meaningful actions, then check that they actually work.
- Analyze results by market and offer, with visible collection limits.
Give the same meaning to the journey steps
Bring marketing and sales together to define the states: request received, usable contact, qualified need, open opportunity, and business decision. Add rejection reasons, such as a job application or a need outside the scope. An organization that counts all forms as prospects cannot measure the relevance of its content.
Qualification must remain observable. An opportunity may require an identified need, a person to contact, and an agreed next step. The budget or deadline may remain unknown at the beginning. The goal is to have a consistent rule, applied in the CRM, rather than imposing a universal definition.
Our B2B strategy guide presents the channels and levers. Here, the subject is their measurement: understanding how content leads to a useful conversation, and then to a business process.
Assign an indicator to each question
TableAssign an indicator to each question · shareable block
| Relevant indicator | Conclusion to avoid | |
|---|---|---|
| Are we visible? | Impressions and queries in GSC | An impression corresponds to a reader |
| Does the result attract? | Clicks and CTR by query and position | A global CTR explains all content |
| Does the visitor explore? | Sessions and paths in GA4 | A session represents a new prospect |
| Does someone contact us? | Confirmed contact action | A contact page view is a request |
| Does the need match? | Qualification documented in the CRM | Any form is a business opportunity |
| Is the project moving forward? | Steps and reasons for business decisions | The last click alone explains the sale |
GSC and GA4 do not observe the same thing. The first measures presence and interactions in Google search; the second measures activity on the site based on available tracking. Their numbers may differ for several reasons. Do not force equality between clicks and sessions just to produce a reassuring table.
Choose events that correspond to a useful action
In GA4, key events are used to identify important actions for the organization. The name or labeling of an event does not guarantee its business significance. It is necessary to check what triggers it and under what conditions it is recorded.
For a form, do we distinguish a click on the button, an attempt, and a submission that is actually accepted? For a call, do we measure the click on a phone link or a conversation? For an appointment, does the event correspond to opening the tool or a confirmed booking? These differences should appear in the measurement dictionary.
Test a successful journey and a failed journey. Check for duplicates when reloading and behaviors on mobile. Also check the effect of consent choices and blocked tools. The absence of an analytical trace does not always allow you to conclude the absence of an actual action.
Link the requests to the CRM with restraint
Keep the information useful for qualification and, when your system allows, the original page and campaign parameters. Avoid sending personal data in URLs or in analytics tools. Define uses and access with the responsible parties.
Add a simple question at the first contact: how did the person hear about the company? The answer can supplement the available traces, without being perfectly accurate. A recommendation, an old reading, and a recent search can all contribute to the decision.
The CRM must keep the status, the relevant department, and the reason for disqualification. Marketing analysis then becomes more useful: many contacts for an absent offer, few requests but several relevant projects, or visitors who view services without completing the form.
Compare the right periods and the right markets
Use periods of equal duration, complete and defined in the same way. Compare the last thirty available days with the previous thirty, then examine a longer window. A small series can fluctuate greatly after a few visits, a launch, or a collection change.
For a Quebec company, segment Canada, the language, and the relevant business pages before concluding a recovery. International traffic can be useful, but it does not necessarily serve the same purpose. An overall increase can coexist with a decrease in the market you serve.
Positions and CTR must be read in their context. The mix of queries, countries, and pages can change. Examine a stable group of queries and their associated pages to know if a new guide strengthens an offer or captures a different audience.
Build a table that leads to a decision
Keep a small number of rows per offer: targeted visibility, organic entries, contact actions, actionable contacts, qualified opportunities, and next decision. Add a column on known limitations: event change, consent, late data, or insufficient volume.
Fictitious illustration: a guide receives more impressions, but no qualified requests. Three leads remain distinct: intention too far from purchase, weak link to the offer, or faulty contact measurement. The table alone does not decide; it indicates the next verification.
Before producing more content, ensure that your services, your calls to action, and your qualification use the same vocabulary. An article on an integration should lead to an understandable offer and a demand precise enough for sales.
An event dictionary to align marketing and sales
The following model proposed by Daillac describes the meaning of events before any setup. The custom names are examples. They are not presented as automatic events in GA4. A UI interaction, a confirmed request, and a qualified opportunity have different definitions.
TableAn event dictionary to align marketing and sales · shareable block
| Trigger to document | What the signal allows to conclude | |
|---|---|---|
| Contact click: contact_click | Activation of a contact button | Interest; not a sent request |
| Start: form_start | First interaction with the form | Form started; not completed |
| Request: generate_lead | Effective confirmation of receipt | Request received; quality still unknown |
| Qualification: lead_qualified | Validation of a file by sales in the CRM | Request meeting business criteria |
| Opportunity: opportunity_created | Opportunity created with CRM identifier | Entry into sales tracking |
| Sale: closed_won | Opportunity marked as won in the CRM | Sale recorded according to the agreed definition |
Triggering must prevent a new attempt or a reloaded confirmation page from counting as two requests. CRM steps can remain in a sales table: they do not all need to be sent to GA4. Do not transmit names, emails, or form contents in analytics parameters. Collection conditions and access should be decided with the responsible team.
Fictitious numbered example: fewer visits, more opportunities
This example illustrates the method and does not describe the results of Daillac or a client. Two thirty-day periods cover the same market and the same forms, with assumed comparable collection.
TableFictitious numbered example: fewer visits, more opportunities · shareable block
| Previous period | Recent period | |
|---|---|---|
| Organic sessions of the targeted market | 1 000 | 900 |
| Confirmed unique requests | 20 | 27 |
| Qualified requests | 8 | 12 |
| Opportunities created | 4 | 6 |
Sessions decrease by 10%, but requests increase by 35%. The requests-to-sessions ratio rises from 2% to 3%. Among requests, the qualified share goes from 40% to about 44.4%. These ratios help describe the journey; they do not identify the cause. A modified form, a campaign, or a shift in qualification can also explain the variation.
Do not divide the qualified opportunities this month by the leads this month without specifying the method: some opportunities come from earlier leads. To analyze a cohort, retain the leads entered during the period, then track their qualification at thirty and sixty days. For a monthly activity table, count the actions of the month and name it accordingly. Both views are useful, but their denominators are not interchangeable.
The final reconciliation associates each unique lead with a date, an entry page when that information is available, a market, and a business status. Leads without a known origin remain "unknown origin." This provides a more reliable action plan than forcibly attributing each sale to SEO.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a visit to the contact page a conversion?+
It can serve as a signal of interest, but it does not prove that a person made contact. If it is tracked as a key event, distinguish it from confirmed actions and qualified opportunities in reports.
Why do GSC and GA4 give different numbers?+
The tools measure different steps and apply their own methods. On-site collection may be limited, and the definitions of click and session are not identical. Use each tool for its question, rather than expecting equal totals.
How long should you wait to assess a B2B article?+
The first checks focus on availability and inquiries obtained. The business evaluation requires more perspective, especially with few contacts and a long sales cycle. Set checkpoints at thirty and sixty days, then adjust them according to observed volume.
Can all sales be attributed to SEO?+
Rarely with certainty. Journeys can include referrals, direct visits, campaigns, and offline interactions. Combine the available traces with business qualification and expose the limitations, rather than attributing every sale to a single click.
